In a recent development, Ubisoft, renowned for franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, has decided to cut 124 jobs within its visual effects studio, Hybride, and its global IT team. The decision comes as the gaming industry grapples with ongoing challenges.
Hybride, based in Montreal, has played a significant role in major projects such as Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Despite its contributions, 124 workers, predominantly from Canada, are affected, constituting less than 2 percent of Ubisoft's Canadian workforce. Notably, this move does not impact Ubisoft’s core production teams.
Ubisoft spokesperson Antoine Leduc-Labelle emphasizes the company's strategic efforts to enhance efficiency for long-term success. The decisions, according to Leduc-Labelle, were made after thorough consideration. The affected Canadian employees will receive severance packages, extended benefits, and career assistance, reflecting Ubisoft's commitment to supporting its staff through these challenging times.
The gaming industry has faced unprecedented challenges throughout the year. Ubisoft's decision to lay off employees follows a broader trend, with other major players like Epic Games, Bungie, Naughty Dog, BioWare, and CD Projekt Red also implementing job cuts. This signals a collective response to the difficulties faced by the industry in recent months.
